Introduction
Summer with its long evenings, sunshine and BBQs, brings more photo opportunities than any other time of year. In an effort to look half decent in the hundreds of pictures friends insist on talking, I experimented with some products I had never tried before. Here are the ones I loved this month:
Lush – Mask of Magnaminty
I’ll be honest, I never really bought into Lush as a brand before. I knew their products are all natural and handmade but they are just so expensive I couldn’t justify spending it – or so I thought. Anyway with the humidity of London the past month coupled with the fact that getting around means you’re stuck in a boiling overcrowded tube underground, my skin has been playing up even more than usual. I won’t go into detail but oily skin, heat and makeup shouldn’t mix.
My face needed a refresh and Lush’s Mask of Magnaminty was recommended to me by a friend. I was reluctant to pay nearly ten pounds for a modestly sized tub, but her rant about how good it is won me over so I decided to put aside any prejudgements I had of Lush being overpriced and overrated and I bought it.
Lush knew what they were doing when they made a face-mask that smells like a mint Cornetto. The scent is highly addictive and you will want to eat it. But please don’t, that would be a waste as this does wonders for your skin. If I were to sum up the effect it has in three words they would be, cooling, moisturising and cleansing.
Put it on a clean face, let it dry for about 10-15 minutes and then scrub it off. What you’re left with is a tingly clean feeling face – amazing. I would recommend using this once a week as a special treat at the end of the week. I’m sure it’s the peppermint that causes that tickly feeling that makes it seem as if the mask is really working your skin and pulling out impurities. Okay it didn’t solve all of my issues overnight but I definitely had fewer noticeable blemishes and redness. It leaves your skin so smooth as well, it’s definitely worth splashing out on once in a while.
I feel the need to say sorry to Lush for ever suggesting that their products are hyped up. I’m converted and already decided that the nest thing I’m going to try is their Ocean Salt cleanser, sounds interesting doesn’t it?
Benefit – Posietint
I know this product isn’t cheap but I’m a sucker for Benefit products and their packaging. In my opinion they last a long time and stay on your face so I consider it a worthy purchase. Posietint is a cheek and lip stain, I love multi-purpose products as they save can save that little bit of space in your make up bag.
I had read mixed reviews on Posietint, some people loved it and others said that as a blush it had no pigmentation and just didn’t show up on the face. My verdict is that anyone who thinks it doesn’t show up on their cheeks just doesn’t put enough on. I found the pink cheek stain to be pigmented and long lasting. The colour looks extremely pink out of the bottle but once it’s blended nicely you have a matte milky pink colour, which I love.
It is a liquid/cream consistency, it comes in a bottle and has a brush applicator, similar to a bottle of nail polish. To apply this as a blush you are told to dab a few dots on your cheek and blend it out – but be very quick. If you leave the dots on your face for even a few seconds before blending they will leave a mark. So my preferred way of applying this is to get a blush brush and dab the liquid onto it and then to your face, so that way it is being blended in as soon as it’s applied. I loved playing around with this product and used it in a few ways. It looks great on its own on the cheeks but you can layer a shimmery powder blush on top to give it some sparkle or even just a highlighter.
I used this on my lips as well but I didn’t love it. I found it hard to get an even coverage, using a lip brush helped but still it was a bit messy. The colour was a pretty natural pink but I am someone that prefers highly pigmented lipsticks over sheer lipsticks or stains so for anyone that prefers a more natural lip colour, I’m sure you would enjoy using Posietint for this purpose too.
Soap & Glory – One Heck of a Blot
I’ll probably never purchase another powder other than this one again. I have mentioned that I have oily skin and as you can imagine I will do anything or try any product in an effort not to look like a shiny mess as the end of the day. This stuff works. I’ve never found a powder that works as well.
It’s a translucent powder, which is a plus as you won’t need to worry about finding the right shade for you. The texture is soft and some might say a little bit chalky, but once you apply it you see that it depends on how much you put on. Less is more with this product as my enthusiasm for it one day led me to overdo it and it wasn’t pretty! So pick up a fluffy blending brush and buff this into the skin well. You only need a little for it to do its job. The result is a very matte finish that lasts hours and as long as you don’t put too much on it doesn’t add much weight to the skin.
The packaging is not only very cute with a mirror on the inside that’s the full size of the lid, but it is well made and can endure a lot of knocking about at the bottom of your bag. For this reason I don’t mind paying a few pounds more as it’s much less likely to crack and spill everywhere.
It comes with a blotting pad, which is a nice extra but I prefer the finish of a brush. Overall the soft feel of the powder, the finish it gives as well as the good quality packaging gives the feel of a more luxury brand. Definitely try it if you are looking for something to make your make up stay put.
Rimmel London – Colour Rush Balm
Rimmel have always been my go to brand for lip products and this month I have been loving their colour rush balms. I wanted something moisturising and as Rimmel has a good track record I picked up one of their Colour Rush Balms. The one I chose is a bright red, called The Redder The Better. I wasn’t expecting a great colour pay-off at all when I purchased it, as it’s a balm I assumed it was going to be very moisturising and just give you a natural wash of colour. Needless to say I was delighted when I tried it on and saw bold, bright and highly pigmented colour.
They fulfil their role as a balm excellently too, leaving your lips moisturised and feeling lovely and smooth.
With other highly pigmented lip products you can usually feel them on your lips but Rimmel have formulated it so that it’s virtually weightless when worn. So it feels like you’re just wearing some clear balm but you have the colour of a lipstick – well done Rimmel!
These are perfect for summer, and come in lots of bright colours. Give them a go, you won’t be disappointed.
